Mona Anand on the Power of Yoga Nidra

ISHTA Co-Owner and Yogiraj, Mona Anand, will lead her Yoga Nidra Training: Mona Anand's ISHTA Yoga Nidra Training, August 3-5, 2021 Below she shares how she came to the practice of Yoga Nidra and why she think's it is so beneficial for the modern yogi. I was first introduced to yoga nidra in Mumbai, India in my teens. I was a competitive athlete at the time and didn’t know how to stop and rest. Then I took my first Yoga nidra class and it took me to a place of deep inner stillness and peace that I had never experienced. I was hooked from the very first class! My teacher used to say that twenty minutes of yoga nidra was equivalent to four hours of sleep. My own experience with yoga nidra validates this ...

Life Cycles with Alan Finger

Everything in life happens in cycles: nature, seasons, relationships, emotions, and even sensations. There is always a beginning, a middle, and an end. In yoga, these cycles are represented through the granthis, which are the Energetic knots or spirals of energy, that keep us bound to this plane of existence. We can experience these cycles of energy through the vibration of the sound "AUM."  The first sound of "AUM" is the "Ah" sound, which represents creation. This is usually the first sound that a baby utters and the first letter of the alphabet. When we chant the sound "AUM" we can feel the "Ah" sound resonate at the base of the spine. It represents our unconscious and the energy of Brahma, the creator. The second sound of...

Yogiraj Peter Ferko on Meditation

Peter Ferko will lead the upcoming ISHTA Meditation Training | June 8-10 along with Alan and Sarah Finger. Below he unpacks how a regular meditation practice helps to move away from limited belief patterns - toward experiencing things as they truly are.     In today’s world, we are programmed to respect the importance of what yogis call manas, the sensory mind. Our programming into the dominance of manas happens in our culture via school, and later, via marketing, where businesses teach you to look outside yourself, to their products, for your answers. But the fact is, we would be best off getting in touch with our inner self, the source of inspiration and unbound intelligence — what we think of as “genius." Unfortunately, acting and reacting primarily...

Peter Ferko Yogiraj · Senior Trainer · Specialty Trainer In my opinion, teacher training is the best way available to deepen your practice and to learn what it means to be a yogi. The transformation of your life can start right now, you can learn how to find acceptance and grace, and experience your unbound potential. Spotlight on an ISHTA Teacher: Gina Menza

When did you take your first yoga class? What was that like? I took my first yoga class in the late 80's. It was the dog days of summer in NYC and I heard there was an air conditioned yoga class with soothing music at a Crunch gym near my apartment in the east village.   How did you find ISHTA? I found Alan through a friend in Los Angeles who knew Al from his days teaching in Hollywood. Al had just moved to New York and I joined his classes when they were in a photography studio above Bumble and Bumble.   Why is a restorative practice so important for students to do? When we ask a physical body to go through what is demanded in life it is exhausting. Not...

Why I love Restorative by Mona Anand

Anand Menza Restorative Teacher Training (Virtual Training) | April 12 - 14, 2021 The impact restorative yoga has had in releasing stress and tension for me is very personal. About fourteen years ago I had a bout of serious asthma attacks that were life changing. I was continually in and out of the hospital and put on high levels of cortisone for an extended period that created extreme anxiety and panic attacks. I started practicing restorative yoga, which was an integral part of my recovery. Restorative calmed my nervous system, relaxed my body and released tension from my breath. The effects of this practice released the fear of future attacks. No amount of trying to talk myself out of the situation helped because my whole system was stuck in...

Spotlight on an ISHTA Teacher: Cathy Lilly

Where did you grow up? I grew up in a township of Detroit, the Motor City. It was known as a lower economic community of limited resources but the undeveloped landscape was a wondrous kids' playground! My brothers and I enjoyed bicycling in vast open spaces before and during the development of track housing and vast freeways. A local beekeeper also allowed us to play in the fields and trees of his farm so I became adept at tree climbing which set the foundation for gymnastics ability. When did you take your first yoga class? Just after a workout in the college gym a yoga teacher invited me to take her class. Timing was perfect as I was in no rush to do any homework, but after class...

Deepak Chopra on Mindfulness and Meditation

WPIX-TV Morning News and Deepak Chopra stopped by ISHTA to chat with Sarah Platt-Finger about Deepak’s new book MetaHuman, the benefits of Meditation / Yoga, and Mindfulness. Check out this fun feature here. New Yorkers are always on the run from the moment we wake up in the morning until we finally crash into bed. We walk fast, we talk fast, we even eat on the run. But in his new book "Meta Human," Deepak Chopra explains that you can awaken the superhero within by being still.  ...

Spotlight on an ISHTA Teacher: Jenny Bloom

Where did you grow up? I'm a native New Yorker. When did you take the Teacher Training and what inspires you about the ISHTA way of teaching ? I decided to take my 200 & 300 hour Teacher Training back-to-back Fall 2013 and Fall 2014 at ISHTA Yoga. I started Teacher Training during a transformative time of my life. I started a career that was no longer speaking to me, and I didn't know what was next. I was terrified. All I knew was that coming to class every day at ISHTA was helping me to feel ok with not knowing. The hugeness of my uncertainty was really overwhelming, and I found that cultivating my practice. Being in Shiva helped me move through a complex and challenging moment. What most...
