Spotlight on an ISHTA Teacher: Gina Menza

When did you take your first yoga class? What was that like? I took my first yoga class in the late 80's. It was the dog days of summer in NYC and I heard there was an air conditioned yoga class with soothing music at a Crunch gym near my apartment in the east village.   How did you find ISHTA? I found Alan through a friend in Los Angeles who knew Al from his days teaching in Hollywood. Al had just moved to New York and I joined his classes when they were in a photography studio above Bumble and Bumble.   Why is a restorative practice so important for students to do? When we ask a physical body to go through what is demanded in life it is exhausting. Not...

Why I love Restorative by Mona Anand

Anand Menza Restorative Teacher Training (Virtual Training) | April 12 - 14, 2021 The impact restorative yoga has had in releasing stress and tension for me is very personal. About fourteen years ago I had a bout of serious asthma attacks that were life changing. I was continually in and out of the hospital and put on high levels of cortisone for an extended period that created extreme anxiety and panic attacks. I started practicing restorative yoga, which was an integral part of my recovery. Restorative calmed my nervous system, relaxed my body and released tension from my breath. The effects of this practice released the fear of future attacks. No amount of trying to talk myself out of the situation helped because my whole system was stuck in...

Spotlight on an ISHTA Teacher: Cathy Lilly

Where did you grow up? I grew up in a township of Detroit, the Motor City. It was known as a lower economic community of limited resources but the undeveloped landscape was a wondrous kids' playground! My brothers and I enjoyed bicycling in vast open spaces before and during the development of track housing and vast freeways. A local beekeeper also allowed us to play in the fields and trees of his farm so I became adept at tree climbing which set the foundation for gymnastics ability. When did you take your first yoga class? Just after a workout in the college gym a yoga teacher invited me to take her class. Timing was perfect as I was in no rush to do any homework, but after class...
