Cheerleading for Meditation by Peter Ferko

Yogiraj Peter Ferko will co-lead the upcoming ISHTA Meditation Training with Alan and Sarah Finger. (Dec. 15 - 17) I was speaking to a student in a private yesterday, and she told me that her whole view on life was so different since she’d been practicing meditation and mantra and processing things with me over the past year. She said, everything is so open and of the moment, but there is no way to say it — it sounds hokey when I try.  And yet, we need to do what Alan Finger calls “cheerleading” sometimes, to encourage people to try the simple, yet profound, techniques of meditation. And that requires words, whether they sound hokey or not. So here are some words about why studying meditation is...

Claire Kinsella Holtje writes about Financial Yoga

The Autumn leaves are one of the most gorgeous gifts of nature! For those of us on the east coast we are experiencing a late fall, the leaves are taking their time. But sure as night follows day, nature is plugged into a Higher Intelligence, a Flow that supports this natural order a progressing that leads to evolution and change. So as in nature, flow and healing happens when we realize and practice the soulfull art of surrendering to this circulating energy. As we practice directing the flow of energy within us through choice, breathwork, meditation and clear/purposeful intention, we cultivate our capacity for clearing pathways within us. This flow supports us in making deliberate decisions in our day to day lives. Conscious choices correlate to clear rewards. Clearly circulating...

Sarah Finger Discusses the Origin and Twofold Meaning of ISHTA

Yogiraj Sarah Finger will join Yogiraj Master Teachers Mona Anand, Ulrica Norberg, and Katrina Repka, and other ISHTA Senior Teachers to lead the upcoming 200-hour ISHTA Teacher Training at Hi Yoga in Oslo. One of the greatest gifts of teaching yoga is being able to share the teachings with others in a Training format. At ISHTA, our Teacher Training program is about so much more than just learning how to teach Yoga: it is about understanding how to integrate the practice into your living. I have been lucky enough to witness the growth and connection of many different Training groups over the years. Even though each person is unique, the shared experience is commonly one of evolution and self-discovery. ISHTA has a twofold meaning. One is an...

Q&A with Kristin Leal – Insanely Beautiful Human Anatomy

Kristin Leal is the creator of the Kaya Yoga and MetaAnatomy™ 100-, 200- and 300-hour teacher training. She is the author of “The Yoga Fan” (2003) and “MetaAnatomy, Anatomy of a Yogi” (2014), which was called “smart and sassy” by Elena Brower and “a luscious resource” by Rod Stryker. Kristin will lead her MetaAnatomy 5 CORE training at ISHTA Yoga October  9th - 13th.  What interests you about anatomy? I think there is something so awe-inspiring and insanely beautiful about studying the human body. There is stunning dance of both vulnerability and strength that I am endlessly fascinated by. Why is it important for yoga teachers to have a solid understanding of anatomy? Well, I think it's important for every human to have a solid understanding of anatomy! This is the...

We All Have a Responsibility to Look at Injustice by Reema Datta

Friends, It is a core teaching of Yoga and ancient philosophies worldwide that the outer world is a reflection of the inner. We all have a responsibility to look within and see our role in being creators, sustainers and destroyers of violence and injustice. With eyes of compassion and understanding we must look at our anger, attachments, jealousy, fear, anxiety and all mental habits that create and perpetuate injustice. We must look at our shadows. Let them speak to us and let us listen like mothers consoling a crying child. It's okay. Let the shadows surface and embrace them. Shadow comes from light. When you embrace the shadow, you touch the lesson, the reason, the source. What you embrace shifts. What you resist, persists. Embrace the seeds...

Caroline King on Living and Teaching ISHTA

We've extended the Early Bird Deadline for our Upcoming 200-Hour Summer Intensive Teacher Training. Below, Caroline King, ISHTA 500-Hour Teacher Training graduate, sheds light on her transformative experience living and teaching the ISHTA path. Like many of my ISHTA Teacher Training classmates, I joined the 200-hour training because I loved yoga and the ISHTA approach. I had a more than full-time job, and didn't necessarily look at the training as a ticket to a new career. Fast forward 2 years and I am a 500-hour graduate teaching a community class at ISHTA, one private student and a weekly class at my office where I work full-time. I love my job and doubt I will leave any time soon. But everything about how I do my work, treat myself...

Plant the Seeds, Trust the Process (and tomatoes)

by Melanie Salvatore-August author of Fierce Kindness: Be a Positive Force for Change (Yellow Pear Press 2017) Every mother’s day for the last 5 years I have planted 3-5 tomato plants anticipating the summer growing season.  It is a dream fulfilled and continuing that I have the ability to grow some of my own food and live on a budding homestead in Northern California.  Some years I stop at a local nursery the week before to buy seedlings and other years after the obligatory Mother’s Day brunch or rowdy kid filled stop at Starbucks to get my mom-latte, I stop to pick some up. This year, nothing.  Too busy.  I hadn’t made the time and ahem, no one else thought to buy them for me.  No brunch or...

Life Cycles with Alan Finger

Everything in life happens in cycles: nature, seasons, relationships, emotions, and even sensations. There is always a beginning, a middle, and an end. In yoga, these cycles are represented through the granthis, which are the Energetic knots or spirals of energy, that keep us bound to this plane of existence. We can experience these cycles of energy through the vibration of the sound "AUM."  The first sound of "AUM" is the "Ah" sound, which represents creation. This is usually the first sound that a baby utters and the first letter of the alphabet. When we chant the sound "AUM" we can feel the "Ah" sound resonate at the base of the spine. It represents our unconscious and the energy of Brahma, the creator. The second sound of...
