Kirtan is an ancient yoga practice that uses musical chanting to alter a yogi’s energy. The repeated use of the chanted mantra reinforced by the energy of a group is a powerful tool for bringing an immediate sense of transformation and well-being. Psych Rock Kirtan is a contemporary exploration of this ancient practice, co-developed over many years by ISHTA Yogiraj Peter Ferko together with critically-acclaimed musician and yogini Idgy Dean. This community concert pairs original contemporary music together with a set of powerful chants performed call-and-response, each one directed at a specific energy to bring balance, insight, and wisdom into our lives.
This special occasion (the 11th Psych Rock Kirtan gathering) will also serve as a celebratory sonic send-off for longtime ISHTA community member, Lindsay Sanwald (aka Idgy Dean), who is departing her post at ISHTA to begin studying at Harvard Divinity School this fall. She will spend the next three years in Cambridge working toward a Master of Divinity degree to better hone her spiritual teaching via musical performance – a passion and direction that blossomed through the years working with her mentor, Peter, and the enriching ISHTA Teacher Training programs.
This event is suitable for all levels of practitioner and does not require any special musical or other skill.
